چکیده

introduction: the use of stereological methods in evaluation of volume changes in vital organs such as kidney is very important. in this study, the volume of glomeruli in glycerol-induced acute renal failure in rats was determined. methods: 48 sprague-dawley male rats were divided into 2 groups (1control, 1experiment). experimental group was injected 10ml/kg of 50% glycerol intramuscularly, while the same volume of saline was injected in the control group. after 48h, animals were dissected under deep anesthesia, and right kidneys were fixed by vascular perfusion. microscopic slides were stained with h-e. glomerular volumes were calculated using projecting microscope, point counting and cavalieri principal. results: the results indicated that renal failure induced-glycerol didn’t affect the glomerular volume conclusion: it seems that estimation of glomerular volume can not be a useful variable in identification of acute renal failure induced glycerol, but further investigations are needed to clarify the issue

Cystone, a well-known herbal formulation improves renal function in rats with acute renal failure (ARF) induced by Glycerol intoxication

The present study was aimed to evaluate the beneficial effect of Cystone syrup in an experimental model of glycerol-induced acute renal failure (ARF) in rats. Biochemical parameters, kidney weight and histopathological evaluation were performed to conclude the beneficial effect of Cystone syrup. Administration of single dose of 50% v/v glycerol (8ml/kg.i.m) caused severe renal dysfunction assoc...

Potential contribution of endothelin to renal abnormalities in glycerol-induced acute renal failure in rats.

We studied the possible participation of endothelin-1 (ET-1) in the pathogenesis of renal damage in glycerol-induced acute renal failure (ARF). Cortical mRNA expression of ET-1 increased, peaking at 10 hr postinjury, but this did not occur in the medulla, plasma concentration and urinary excretion of ET-1 also increased in this model. There was no change in ETA receptor mRNA, whereas the ETB re...

Glomerular hemodynamics in established glycerol-induced acute renal failure in the rat.

The glomerular dynamic correlates of failed filtration were studied in volume replete rats with established glycerol-induced acute renal failure (ARF). Over one-half of all nephrons formed virtually no filtrate, while the single nephron glomerular filtration rate (SNGFR) of fluid-filled nephrons, measured at the glomerulotubular junction to preclude the possibility of covert tubular leakage, av...

Tubular function in glycerol-induced acute renal failure in rats: effect of saline loading and prior acute renal failure.

1. Chronic saline loading and prior induction of acute renal failure are manoeuvres which have been reported to protect against the development of acute renal failure. The underlying mechanisms are unclear. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of these protective manoeuvres on glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and proximal and distal tubular function in the glycerol-induced...
